Formosa Hà Tĩnh Steel is a steel mill north of Đồng Hới in Vietnam . It is owned by Formosa Ha Tinh Steel Corporation , which is part of the Formosa Plastics Group . The establishment of the company began in 2008, and in 2010 33 km² of land was acquired for the construction of the steelworks. The plant was put into operation in 2017.

During a test operation in April 2016, phenol and cyanide, among other things, were discharged into the South China Sea via the wastewater , which led to massive fish deaths . The company was named responsible for the environmental disaster in a statement from the Vietnamese government and agreed to pay $ 500 million for the waste disposal. According to reports from experts monitoring human trafficking , the environmental disaster in Ha Tinh led to increased trafficking of young Vietnamese people who traveled to Europe to improve the financial situation of their families. Among the 39 victims from Vietnam whose bodies were found in a refrigerated truck in Grays , England in October 2019 , there were also people from the Ha Thnh province .
