Lord Rutherford

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Lord Rutherford (also Rutherfurd ) was a hereditary British title ( Lordship of Parliament ) in the Peerage of Scotland .

The title was bestowed with letters patent from King Charles II on January 10, 1661 to the royalist military Andrew Rutherford . The award was made with the special addition that the title could be inherited by other heirs ( heirs of tailzie ) in the absence of male descendants . On February 2, 1663 he was also awarded the title Earl of Teviot . When he died childless in 1664, the earl title expired, while the lord title was given to his relative Sir Thomas Rutherfurd of Hunthill as 2nd lord. He left no children behind, as did his two younger brothers who followed him as 3rd and 4th Lord. The title has been suspended since the latter's death in 1724, as no relative has been able to effectively assert his title claim since then.
