The Formox process (more precisely Formox-formaldehyde process ) is a chemical-technical process for the production of formaldehyde . Formox is a registered trademark of Johnson Matthey. The process has been used by Reichhold Chemicals and Perstorp , among others .

principle

Formaldehyde is produced industrially by the catalytic oxidation of methanol . The reaction is based on the Adkins-Peterson reaction . The most commonly used catalyst is a mixture of an iron oxide with molybdenum and / or vanadium . In the Formox process using iron oxide and molybdenum and / or vanadium, methanol and oxygen react at 300–400 ° C to form formaldehyde according to the equation:

Further oxidation of the formaldehyde during its production yields formic acid , which is also found dissolved in formaldehyde in the ppm range.
