Fornix rupture

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The fornix rupture is a tear in the renal pelvis in the transition area to the parenchyma due to an increase in pressure in the renal pelvis.

Acute hydronephrosis , for example from a ureteral stone , leads to a rupture of the fornix in 10 to 18% of cases. A fornix rupture can also be caused by an excretory urogram in colic- free patients. This is due to the diuretic effect of the contrast medium , which leads to a massive increase in pressure under colic conditions.

As a result, urine from the renal pelvis enters the area around the kidney. Treatment usually requires antibiotic therapy and a ureteral splint .
