history

In 1953 the Research Institute for Rationalization was founded in Aachen under the sponsorship of the "Association for the Promotion of Research Institutes for Rationalization". In addition to representatives from science and industry, the North Rhine-Westphalian Ministry for Economics and Transport was also one of the initiators. The original aim of the institute was to increase productivity for the German domestic market . Financing came from state funds. In 1977 the institute became one of the first Blue List institutes and until 1984 was half financed by federal and state funds. From 1984 the institute was initially continued as a state institute.

Since the institute was founded, there has been a cooperation with the "Institute for Work Science" at RWTH Aachen University. In 1986 the cooperation with the IAW was formally regulated in a contract with RWTH Aachen University, since then it has been a so-called affiliated institute .
