The research center for German and European food law is an institution of the law, economics and life science faculty of the University of Bayreuth , which serves to research the complex subject of food law in its international and interdisciplinary dimension. It was founded in 1990 on the initiative of the Working Group of the Bavarian Food Industry (ABEW) and with the support of the Bavarian State Government . She receives continuous funding from the Association for the Promotion of the Research Center for German and European Food Law, based in Munich.

Food law as a research topic

The scientific work on food law bundled in the research center is intradisciplinary due to the complexity of the subject, which is constantly changing and essentially determined by European law (e.g. Health Claims Regulation ). Food law encompasses all aspects of the value chain, so it is at odds with the established legal categories of public law and civil law. In addition, food law increasingly refers to methods and findings from the humanities and natural sciences, so that these aspects are already included in the interpretation and application of the law. This is why the relevant expertise is concentrated in the Bayreuth research facility.

The research center also has a switching function: the food industry, politics, justice and administration as well as, last but not least, the public, who are highly sensitive to nutrition and consumer issues, demand well-founded, reliable and pragmatic answers to food law challenges.
