Forest chain

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

As forestry chains refers specifically to the wooden back designed high-strength chains. Forest chains are available in various dimensions and designs. In connection with rope winches and rope pulleys, logs can also be pulled from rough terrain. The chains are easy to find again in the forest thanks to the appropriate coloring.

Quality grades of forest chains

The chains and their accessories are marked by the manufacturers according to the quality classes. Wear resistance (special coating) ensures a long service life and therefore economy.

Standard forest chains

Forest log chains are available in different quality classes . Quality class 8 (painted red) is common for general forest use. Thanks to the extensive range of accessories in the coupling system, forest chains of any desired length and design can be installed economically in a modular system. Round link chains or square chains are used depending on the application.

Forest chains for professional riders

The Profirücker uses special grade 10 (painted blue). Due to the higher tensile strength of the material, smaller chain dimensions can be used - this in some cases results in considerable weight savings. The special grade 10 is only offered as a square chain and therefore has a high grip, especially on wet or icy wood.

Types of forest chains

Forest chains are offered in different standard designs:

Back chains

Spinning chain with suspension link (green) and loop hook (red)

This type of chain has a large suspension link at one end and a loop hook or load hook at the other end. The suspension link is attached directly to the tractor. The other end of the chain with the hook is looped around the trunk to be pulled, the loop on the back pulls tightly around the trunk.

General purpose chains

In contrast to the back chain, a parallel hook is used here as the end fitting so that the chain can be shortened as required. Here, however, the chain on the back is not pulled tight around the trunk by the tensile forces.

Choker chains

When using choker or choke chains or these are attached to the pull rope by means of a choker hook or a rope sliding bar. The most common choker chain consists of a loop hook on one side and a through pin on the other side of the chain.

A so-called rope sliding bracket with a shortening strap is already attached to the pull rope. The chain can be hung back at any length using the shortening tab.
