Fort Oranje (also known as Fort Orange) is a fort on the Brazilian island of Itamarcá in the state of Pernambuco .

history

It was built by the Dutch Dutch West India Company during the existence of the Dutch-Brazilian colony about 60 km north of Recife . Construction began in 1631 under the direction of Steyn Callenfels based on the designs of the engineer Pieter van Bueren and initially consisted of branches and tamped earth. From 1654 it was used by the Portuguese.

Historical legacy

In 1938 the building was declared a Historic Heritage Site. Today it is visited by around 70,000 visitors annually.
