Fort XII
At Fort XII is a former Grade II listed fortification in Magdeburg district Werder in Saxony-Anhalt . In the local register of monuments it has been listed as a monument since October 18, 1994 under registration number 094 06399 .
General
The Fort XII was one of 14 forts of the fortress Magdeburg . With the introduction of the "rifled gun barrel" there was again the need to expand the fortifications of Magdeburg. For this purpose, a belt of forts was built from 1866, which were built at a distance of 1000 to 3000 meters from the core fortress. After the area of the rayon had been expanded, the fort belt began in 1890 with the construction of eight intermediate works. The fort was used for all-round defense on the Elbe island.
history
The fort was laid out between 1866 and 1873. The status as a fortress city of Magdeburg was lifted with the cabinet order of January 23, 1900 and the dismantling began. In 1908, for example, the former fortress was integrated into the public part of the Rotehorn Park . The fort was transformed into an open-air theater , the basic structures remain unchanged. During the 1980s the fort belonged to the Ministry of State Security . Today there is a cafe in the remains of the fort.
description
The hexagonal fort consisted of glacis , trusses and a gatehouse, reserve casemate , powder magazine. It was surrounded by a moat, over which a moat bridge with a pulling part led.

The fort was built on a heaped hill on the southern tip of the Elbe island of Werder.
