Forte Filippo

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Forte Filippo is one of the two fortresses that dominate the Tuscan town of Porto Ercole on Monte Argentario . The alignment of the two forts made it very difficult for attackers from the sea to approach Porto Ercole. The fortress was built by the Orsini and significantly expanded by the Grand Duchy of Tuscany . The Spaniards brought the fortress into its final form. After the founding of Italy by Giuseppe Garibaldi , the fortress was used as a barracks for a few decades . After restoration in the 1980s, the complex is now accessible to everyone.

Fort Filippo was built in its present form in the 16th century in the "garrison state" of the Spaniards
