Fortis Colonia

Fortis Colonia ( Latin : strong Cologne) is a Cologne association founded in 2009 and registered in March 2010, which deals with 2000 years of Cologne history in all facets, including the effects of city fortifications on today's cityscape and the (re) uses of such facilities . It is deliberately not limited to aspects of military history.

The association is committed to the preservation, renovation and use or conversion of all fortress structures, since only a sensible and monument-compliant use of historical monuments can help to preserve them for future generations. He works with many other initiatives. Via the 1st chairman, the Cologne notary Konrad Adenauer, there is a connection to the Cologne Green Foundation , which takes care of the green spaces in which the fortifications are located.

Publications

Towards the end of each year, the club magazine Fortis - Das Magazin appears with various specialist articles on various topics relating to Cologne fortress construction and Cologne's city history. In Fortis , non-Cologne topics are also discussed, e.g. B. Bonn city fortifications , the bridge defense, the Prussian optical telegraph from Berlin to Koblenz with its Cologne station or reports of trips to fortified cities in the Rhineland and in Europe, including Poznań (formerly the fortress city of Posen ).

In November 2015, on the 70th birthday of the first chairman, Konrad Adenauer, the commemorative publication was published: "A green space with a history. Fortifications and outer green belt in Cologne". In the book, all aspects of the outer fortress belt and today's green space are thematized in 21 thematic chapters.

Events

Every year the association organizes an action weekend on the topic of 2000 years of defensive Cologne, the Cologne Fortress Days with free tours, exhibitions and lectures on a changing focus topic. Topics in 2011 were the Roman era, 2012 the Middle Ages, 2013 the Prussian era, in 2014 the focus was on the effects and the conversion of the Cologne fortifications, 2015: early Prussian era and 2016: Cologne fortifications and public greenery.
