Forum newspaper

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Forum newspaper is a common term in Switzerland for a newspaper that represents a certain range of opinions. In contrast, there are party papers and religious / denominational newspapers.

Emergence

The declared or statutorily stipulated characteristic of a forum newspaper is diversity of opinion. «Newspapers that call themselves 'forum newspapers' meet this wish [of the readership] for balance…" The term is based on the forum in the Roman Empire , which was open to all as a political, legal and religious center.

Forum newspapers appeared in large numbers in the 1970s. The term was coined at the time by Peter Studer , a Swiss publicist. The reasons for the formation of forum newspapers from several newspapers are often the pressure to save and the advertising income.

Representative

A well-known forum newspaper is the Basler Zeitung , which arose from the National-Zeitung and the Basler Nachrichten since 1977 and has since wanted to be responsible for a wider readership.
