Messel Fossils and Local History Museum
The Messel Fossil and Local History Museum was founded by the Messel eV Museum Association in the old town hall, Langgasse 2, and is maintained by it with the support of the Messel community . The idea for this arose during the struggle to preserve the Messel mine , which was to be used as a landfill.
The museum shows both the local history and economic development of the local industry, as well as a large exhibition on the geological history of the Middle Eocene with original finds from the Messel pit. The museum is particularly characterized by a modern and visitor-friendly design that also meets scientific requirements. Exemplary, for example, are the reconstructions of the subtropical habitat that are not only suitable for children and are offered to visitors.
In 2006 the State Office for the Preservation of Monuments awarded the Museum Association for exemplary voluntary work in the preservation of monuments.
