The Foundation for Intelligent Physical Agents (FIPA) is a standardization body that has existed since 1996, the aim of which is to create a communication basis for heterogeneous, interacting software agent systems.

In general, FIPA deals with agent communication, agent management and the transport of agent messages. Agent communication involves, for example, interaction protocols for communication between agents and the use of semantic languages ​​such as Resource Description Framework (RDF) in agent technologies. The transport of agent messages deals, for example, with the interoperability of agent architectures with other network architectures, e.g. B. the exchange of ACL messages (Agent Communication Language) with HTTP or WAP servers.

The 'physical' in the name of the committee is actually inappropriate, since the committee mainly specifies specifications for software agent systems, currently there are 25 finished standards, and not e.g. B. published for robots.

Members of FIPA are research institutes, RWTH Aachen is represented from Germany , and large companies from Europe, America and Asia, etc. a. Boeing , Siemens and Toshiba .

FIPA members voted in 2005 to join the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) and became the eleventh member of the Standards Committee of the IEEE Computer Society on June 8, 2005 .
