Until the 1950s, the Swiss Army's means of transport were mainly based on horse-drawn carts called Fourgons. The Fourgons were specially designed for all possible purposes. Since 1864, they have mainly been manufactured by the Federal Construction Workshop (K + W) in Thun .
There were fourgons for the transport of luggage, ammunition, weapons, artillery, pontoons , generators, searchlights, etc. They were called ambulance fourgons , carrier pigeon fourgons , mountain fourgons , field kitchen fourgons ( “goulash cannons” ), radio operators fourgons, etc.
With the motorization, the term Fourgon was also transferred to road vehicles ( “Mowag Fourgon PTT” , “ Saurer 3CT1D fourgon”).
The “Collection of Historical Army Material”, managed by the HAM Foundation , has over 150 wood-made Fourgons at the Burgdorf site , which have been carefully restored and preserved.
