The Foyle Valley Railway is a railway museum in Derry , Northern Ireland , which has been closed since April 2002 , with its own, now disused, 4.8 km long, single-track museum railway .
history
The museum was opened in 1989 by Derry City Council and the North West of Ireland Railway Society on part of the west bank of the River Foyle railway, formerly owned by the County Donegal Railways Joint Committee (CDJRC) and the Great Northern Railway, respectively had been operated. The building at the Londonderry Foyle Road and rail tracks with a track width of 3 feet (914 mm) used to be part of the railhead Omagh about Strabane extending to Derry railway.
It has been closed since April 2002 due to insufficient visitor numbers. It had previously become increasingly difficult to find enough volunteers, and Derry City Council decided to stop paying paid employees after a falling out with the Foyle Valley Railway Society, with whom it had jointly founded and operated the museum.
The exhibition consisted of a replica platform, and the exhibits gave visitors the opportunity to find out why there used to be several railway companies in the city and how they ran their business.
The 3 foot (914 mm) gauge narrow gauge steam locomotive that still stands in front of the museum today was built by Nasmith & Wilson and delivered to the County Donegal Railways Joint Committee in 1907 with the number 16 and the name Donegal . In 1926 a superheater , i.e. H. a steam dryer, retrofitted, and the locomotive was operated from 1937 as No. 4 under the name Meenglas . It was taken out of service on December 31, 1959 when the CDJRC railway company was dissolved.
A County Donegal Diesel Railbus used to run as a museum train on the approximately 3 miles (4.8 km) route along the River Foyle . It has been in service with Fintown Railway since 2002 after the North West of Ireland Railway Society got into trouble.
