Fractional urea excretion
The fractional urea excretion (FE urea ) is a characteristic value of the kidney function and indicates what proportion of the glomerularly filtered urea is actually excreted.
U Urea : urea-urea
P Urea : plasma urea
U Krea : urinary creatinine
P Krea : plasma creatinine
Use in the context of the differential diagnosis of acute kidney failure , especially after the use of diuretics , as this affects the usability of fractional sodium excretion :
FE urea <35%: | prerenal kidney failure (retention of urea) |
FE urea > 35%: | renal kidney failure (decreased ability of the kidneys to concentrate) |
