François Dufault

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

François Dufault , also De Fault , Du Faux and Du Faut (* before 1604 (?) In France, † after 1672 (possibly in London)), was a French lutenist and composer .

Life

As a student of Denis Gaultier , he enjoyed an excellent reputation as an instrumentalist, as evidenced by many contemporary sources in which he is described as one of the great lutenists of his time. Almost nothing is known about his life; he may have been in England at the end of the 1660s.

He has a collection of twelve lute compositions in tablature , as well as a number of individual works in handwriting or other combinations. After that he took a lot of harmonic liberties and wrote an almost improvisational style. One of his suites (in G minor) closes with a tombeau in memory of the lutenist Monsieur Blancrocher .
