François Flory

François Flory (* around 1540 in Lille , † after 1577) was a French arithmetic master, school principal and author in Antwerp in the 16th century.

Originally from Lille , he opened an arithmetic school for merchants in Antwerp and also taught bookkeeping and languages ​​(French, Dutch, Italian, Spanish, English). He published several works about it. He became a citizen of Antwerp in March 1562. There he was a member of the St. Ambrose Guild (the school teachers' guild). How long his school existed and when exactly it was founded is not known. He can be traced back to Antwerp until 1577.

In 1562 he published a book on bookkeeping (in French), in 1565 he translated Ludovico Guicciardini's description of the Netherlands into French (Description de tous le Pays-Bas), in 1572 a book with exchange tables and in 1577 his arithmetic book Les Practiques des Chiffre . It was translated into English in 1596 by John Weddington or Waddington (an English bookseller in Antwerp) ( The Practice of Ciphering ). In 1576 he published in Antwerp an Italian translation of Nicolas de Nicolay's trip to Istanbul (whose trip was accompanied by the French ambassador from 1551).

Another author of arithmetic books in the Flemish trading metropolis Antwerp in the 16th century was Valentin Mennher .
