Valentin Mennher

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Valentin Mennher (* around 1521 in Kempten ; † August 9, 1570 in Antwerp ) was a German arithmetic master in Antwerp in the 16th century.

Mennher was a student of Christoph Rudolff in Vienna and was in Augsburg and Venice before he came to Antwerp in 1549 as an accountant for the Fuggers. There he was a member of the St. Ambrose Guild of Schoolmasters (1565/66 as their head) and was an arithmetic teacher. Between 1550 and 1571 he published arithmetic books and books on the application of mathematics and entertainment mathematics there. Michel Coignet reprinted them with solutions in Antwerp in 1573, as well as his arithmetic books.

In one of his books he describes Luca Pacioli's double-entry bookkeeping . He was probably one of the few who taught higher mathematics (algebra, trigonometry) in Antwerp. Coignet was probably one of his students. Antich Rocha published a Spanish translation of Mennher's bookkeeping book in Barcelona in 1565 .

Denis Henrion published a selection from his writings in Paris in 1620 (with commentary by Michel Coignet ).
