François Louis Poëtevin

François Louis Poëtevin (* 1707 in Bern ; † in the 18th or 19th century) was a Swiss Romance philologist , grammarian and lexicographer who worked in Eßlingen , Worms and Lausanne .

life and work

Poëtevin was language master for French at high schools in Eßlingen and Worms, then teacher ("régent") at the Collège in Lausanne. His extensive bilingual French-German and German-French dictionary from 1754 (published by the Johann Rudolf Im Hof ​​publishing house in Basel, founded in 1744) proudly bears the title “Swiss dictionary” and is thus in that of the German (less of the French) dictionaries dominated dictionary landscape an exception, but in contrast to his grammar (of which Goethe speaks in a letter of October 13, 1766) experienced only one additional edition in 1783.
