François Martin (governor)

François Martin (* 1634 ; † 1706 ) was the first French governor general of Pondicherry . As a representative of the French Compagnie des Indes Orientale , the French East India Company , he developed the fishing village, which was acquired by an Indian prince in 1672, into a strong French base in India, despite multiple threats . His predecessor was François Baron, his successor as governor general was Pierre Dulivier . A street in Pondicherry was named after him.
