Frances Saunders

Dame Frances Carolyn Saunders DBE CB (born June 28, 1954 ) is a British physicist.

From 2013 to 2015 she was President of the Institute of Physics . In 2018 she was ennobled as Dame Commander of the Order of the British Empire .

After attending the girls' school Portsmouth High School in Southsea , Saunders studied physics at Nottingham University ( BSc 1975) and received a PhD in 1984 with a thesis on liquid crystals .

She did research at the Royal Signals and Radar Establishment (now part of the Defense Research Agency ) and was a civil servant in the UK Office of Science and Technology , now part of the Department for Business, Innovation and Skills .

From 2007 to 2012 Saunders headed the Defense Science and Technology Laboratory (dstl).
