Francine (family)

The Francine family ( Italian: Francini ) was a family of French fountain masters that traced back to Thomas Francine ( Italian: Tommaso Francini ), originally from Florence , who was brought to France by King Henri IV in 1598 with his brother Alexandre . Thomas Francine became director of the Eaux et Fontaines du Roi and, in 1623, director general des eaux et fontaines royales (roughly: general director of the royal water pipes and fountains ). This position went from 1623 to 1784 under the kings Henry IV to Louis XV. from father to son of this family.

Important members of the family

The founder of the dynasty and his oldest male descendants were:

  • Thomas Francine (Tommaso Francini) (1571-1651), who worked for Henri IV in particular at the Château neuf of Saint-Germain-en-Laye and at the Fontainebleau Castle and was supported by Louis XIII. 1623 was appointed general director of eaux et fontaines royales ;
    • François (1617–1688), Intendant général des eaux et fontaines since 1651 under Louis XIV, Seigneur de Grand'Maisons, who was largely responsible for the development and construction of the water features in the palace gardens of Versailles and its water supply that extended far into the country ;
      • Pierre-François (1654–1720), who worked with his father in Versailles, after whose death he became general manager of the eaux et fontaines and in 1707 received the title 1 he comte de Villepreux ;
        • François-Henri (1684–1731), 2 e comte de Villepreux, general manager of eaux et fontaines ;
          • Thomas François Honoré (1724–1780), 3 e comte de Villepreux, general manager des eaux et fontaines ;
            • Pierre-Thomas (1773–1784), 3 e comte de Villepreux, sixth and last general manager général des eaux et fontaines ;
    • Pierre Francine (1621–1686), second eldest son of Thomas Francine;
  • Alexandre Francine (Alessandro Francini), brother of Thomas Francine, Ingénieur des eaux et fontaines du château de Fontainebleau .
