Francis Wey
Francis Wey (born August 12, 1812 in Besançon , † March 9, 1882 in Paris ) was a French writer, art critic and Romanist .
life and work
Wey went to Paris in 1830, graduated from high school there in 1833 and graduated from the Ecole des Chartes in 1837. He became Inspector General of the Paris Department Archives. Wey was friends with Charles Nodier and acquaintance of Victor Hugo , Gérard de Nerval and Théophile Gautier . He made a name for himself with novels, plays, travelogues, art reviews and works on the French language. He is considered the first critic of artistic photography.
Wey's book Histoire des révolutions du langage en France (Paris 1848) is a 500-page history of the French language and grammarography from its beginnings to the 17th century. In the foreword to his collection of Remarques sur la langue française au dix-neuvième siècle, sur le style et la composition littéraire (2 vols., Paris 1845, also 1973) he analyzes the "crise du français" using the term, the should determine the public linguistic discussion in France for a long time.
