Frank Jensen (born May 28, 1961 in Ulsted in North Jutland ) is a former Danish politician ( Socialdemokraterne ). He was Lord Mayor of Copenhagen from 2010 until his resignation in 2020 .

Life

Jensen grew up as the son of a mayor and a teacher in North Jutland. He studied economics at Aalborg University and graduated in 1986.

As a teenager he was involved in the Danish Social Democratic Youth and later became a parliamentarian. He was a member of the parliamentary finance committee and the foreign policy committee. From 1994 to the end of 1996 Jensen was Minister of Science in Poul Nyrup Rasmussen's cabinet and then until 2001 also Minister of Justice in Rasmussen's cabinet. In 2005 he was just defeated in the strike vote on the party leadership of the Danish Social Democrats against Helle Thorning-Schmidt .

In 2009, according to his own statements, Helle Thorning-Schmidt asked him whether he would run for the mayor's office in Copenhagen. Jensen was elected and was mayor of the capital from 2010.

In October 2020, after several sexual harassment charges against him, he resigned and withdrew from politics. Jensen admitted that he had sexually molested various women throughout his career. Ritt Bjerregaard, his predecessor in office, said he had been accused of harassment of women since 2004 and more cases still emerged. The leader of the Social Democrats in the City Council, Lars Weiss , was his successor temporarily.
