Frank Pieter Israel
Frank Pieter Israel (* 1946 in Delft ) is a Dutch radio astronomer .
Life
He worked at the California Institute of Technology in the US and at ESA before joining the Leiden Observatory . In 1976 he received his doctorate from the University of Leiden with a thesis entitled Radio investigations of galactic and extragalacic HII regions .
He currently holds a visiting professorship there.
His main research areas include radio-astronomical observation of dense clouds of matter, especially the mass concentrations in the center of galaxies and dwarf galaxies such as the Magellanic Clouds .
The asteroid (7507) Israel was named after him on the occasion of his 51st birthday on December 14, 1997.
