Franka (comic)
Franka is a comic series by the Dutch illustrator and author Henk Kuijpers . The main character Franka is a private investigator and often experiences adventures in the worlds of art, fashion and film. She can always be found with her dog Boris. The work can be classified into the genre of action and adventure.
content
In the first volumes of the series, Franka is a rather inconspicuous secretary in the Amsterdam crime museum. After she had to deal with her first theft case and helped her colleagues and the police to solve it, she changed into a stronger and self-confident personality in the following time. She initially opened her own detective agency and, thanks to increasing contacts, received orders from the art, fashion and film industries. She is also sometimes and mostly involuntarily involved in criminal cases or adventures during her vacations, which she can solve thanks to her ingenuity and also her increasing professionalism. Since she can thwart crimes again and again through her work and brings criminals to prison, she also makes enemies who meet her again in later years and try to take revenge on her.
Franka's adventures become increasingly dangerous as the volumes progress, and she also goes through personal heights and crises. From volume 15 onwards, a first male leading actor appears at Franka's side in the form of Rix. This is an internationally sought after art thief and Franka and he fall passionately in love. She therefore tries to help him change into legality so that both can live openly with one another. Due to a dramatically unsuccessful surprise attempt by Rix, however, he is killed at the end of the 19th volume, so that Franka mainly deals with this loss in the following two volumes.
The volumes are typically self-contained stories, but they also refer to each other again and again, with characters from previous adventures reappearing as characters in later adventures. Some volumes are structured as two or three parts.
reception
Christel Scheja from Splashcomics on the second album: The second volume already shows the direction in which "Franka" will develop - to a winking thriller adventure in which a heroine is the focus. Precisely because the crime thriller is not too brutal and the plot is easy to follow, children from eight or nine years of age can have fun with the lively story.
Comicblog comments on the ninth volume as follows: Henk Kuijpers' drawing style is straightforward, very clean, almost a little geometric. He is a man of details. His pictures are overflowing with details in this issue. Whether the places are on the beach, in the city, on the train at a night ship party or on land in a luxurious setting, one always feels reminded of hidden objects here. Something is happening everywhere, little things that after the first reading demand to be discovered in a second reading and perhaps also interpreted differently.
Parnass writes about volume 18: Speed, bright colors and sex characterize this new Franka. Sex not in the long-term copulating sense, but rather in many barely or uncovered tits - that looks really delicious. The pictures almost ooze out of their panel boundaries for all the details and the story is told so rapidly that you read the album a second time to see whether all the details were actually told that ultimately led Franka to solve the riddle.
On the 21st volume, comic radio show makes the following criticism: Good thing about the story: Kuijpers manages to incorporate a few twists and turns that are surprising to me until the final decision. Not so good: he almost only lets his heroine watch passively and hardly act. Bad: Kuijper's series, which drifts in the direction of “rich and beautiful”, with a heroine only posing at times in glamor and glamor, begins to annoy. The author should go back to the high phases of the series with strong adventures of the detective.
publication
By the end of 2016, 23 albums and ten short stories had been released. In Germany, the series was initially published by Carlsen Verlag , which, however, omitted the first volume, published the second as volume 1 and did not adhere to the original chronology for volumes 5 and 6 either. At the end of the 90s, the series moved to Epsilon Verlag , which reissued it and in which it appeared until 2018. At the beginning of 2019, Finix announced that Epsilon would continue its stalled publication. Due to the different publication policies of Carlsen and Epsilon, the numbers and titles of the albums differ depending on the publisher. At the same time as the Epsilon album, some of the stories appeared in ZACK as preprints in sequels, although the magazine and album publications sometimes differ, as Henk Kuijpers is a perfectionist who has now reworked his comics.
