history
Frankford was founded by German emigrants in the second half of the 17th century. The name of the village was probably taken over by the Franckfort Company , which developed the area at what is now Frankford (then: Tacony) Creek. The place became an early suburb of Philadelphia. William Penn had a highway from Philadelphia to New York City built that ran through Frankford. The street became known as Frankford Pike , later Frankford Avenue , and became the town's main street.
Founded on March 2, 1800, Frankford Borough was expanded on April 4, 1831 and incorporated into the city of Philadelphia in 1854.
Elevated railway
1922 was elevated train Frankford Elevated opened that since then connects the district with downtown. It runs along Frankford Avenue and ends at the Frankford Transportation Center , the district's major transportation hub. Here you can switch to numerous bus and trolleybus routes . Most residents of the district can walk to the station.
Frankford Avenue
The Frankford Avenue once belonged to the main shopping areas in the north of Philadelphia. During the 80s and 90s, the retail sector there, as in many district centers, fell into a serious crisis ( commercial blight ). Plans for revitalization are currently being discussed. Although numerous shops are still empty, some new shops have opened in recent years. Some retailers hope that the upgrading processes ( gentrification ) of neighboring districts such as Fishtown or Kensington will also reach Frankford. Others fear that the current measures are not enough, as the blocks east of the elevated railway are still affected by crime and drug trafficking .
Northwood
The western part of Frankford, around Oxford Avenue , is called Northwood . In contrast to the rest of Frankford, the development here consists mainly of single-family houses, and the population here is more of the middle class.
