The Frankfurt suburb , also hammer suburb called, is one of the three medieval suburbs of the central Hessian town of Limburg an der Lahn .

The Limburg suburbs emerged after the great fire of 1289, when there was no longer enough space inside the city wall for the growing population. The first occupied building in front of the Hammertor (location at Frankfurter Strasse 7) is the Kastell house in 1279 . Rest houses and blacksmiths are known for the 14th century , whose customers were travelers and traders.

After a second major fire in the city in 1342 , a landwehr was created for the suburbs of Frankfurt and Diezer with the Schiede , a fortification ring with a total width of around 25 meters with a moat and rampart . In retrospect, it is unclear whether the motive was to protect the new settlement area, to secure the numerous gardens and agricultural areas or to deliberately promote the suburbs. The newly enclosed area was not fully settled until the later 19th century.

The area of the Frankfurter Vorstadt was owned by the Electorate of Trier until it was parceled out around 1690 and sold to private individuals. The houses at Frankfurter Strasse 20/22 , 21 and 24 have been preserved from this period . All other buildings from this time were replaced by the beginning of the 20th century.

In 1861/62 the Lahntalbahn was built, the tracks of which divided the Frankfurt suburbs. After the Schiedetunnel opened in 1982 and the traffic was now led around the old town, the level crossing was removed and Frankfurter Strasse finally lost its function as a main traffic artery in the suburbs.

The building fabric on Frankfurter Strasse between Grabenstrasse and Schiede, which has largely been preserved, is a cultural monument and part of the entire Old Town and Frankfurter Vorstadt complex .
