Appearance and wearing style
The clip-on medal, which was initially made in silver , has a diameter of 30.5 mm and shows on its obverse the portrait of Franz Mehring's head looking to the right as seen from the viewer and his name below: FRANZ MEHRING . The portrait is enclosed by the inscription: FÜR JOURNALISTISCHE LEISTUNGEN , which makes up about three quarters of the circumference. The rest is taken up at the lower edge of the medal by two crossed laurel branches. A horizontally soldered needle is attached to the lapel of the medal. From 1973 the medal was then only silver-plated.
