Franz Josef Birnbaumer

Franz Josef Birnbaumer (born February 6, 1904 in Hard ; † December 25, 1973 there ) was an Austrian politician ( ÖVP ) and accountant. He was mayor of Hard and from 1949 to 1964 a member of the Vorarlberg state parliament .

education and profession

After attending the elementary school in Hard, Birnbaumer graduated from the Bregenz State High School for one year and then from the Lustenau commercial school for two years . Between 1919 and 1921 he worked as a typist for the Vorarlberger Volksblatt and then from 1921 to 1936 as an accountant at the Kinz & Röbelen company in Bregenz. He then worked from 1938 to 1939 as an accountant at the Johann Schwärzler KG company in Hard and remained true to his previous profession when he started working for the Josef Pircher company in Bregenz in 1939. He was also an authorized signatory here from the 1950s and was also approved by the tax office in 1945 as an assistant in tax matters. In addition, from 1946 onwards he worked as a book expert under trade law.

Politics and functions

Birnbaumer was active in local politics from 1934 to 1938 as a member of the municipal council and held the office of mayor from July 2, 1936 to March 12, 1938, the day of the “ Anschluss ”. He was then again a member of the local council of Hard from 1945 to 1970 and served as mayor again from May 2, 1945 to April 15, 1947. Furthermore, he was from 1945 to 1947 and from 1955 to 1970 member of the municipal council and from 1960 to 1970 deputy mayor. Within the party he was a member of the state party leadership of the ÖVP Vorarlberg from 1949 to 1964, from 1950 to 1964 a member of the state party council of the ÖVP Vorarlberg and member of the financial audit of the ÖVP Vorarlberg. Furthermore, from 1960 he was a member of the state group executive committee of the ÖAAB. As a member of the Bregenz constituency , he was a member of the Vorarlberg state parliament from October 25, 1949 to October 28, 1964, where he was a member of the finance committee and until 1959 a member of the agricultural committee.

Birnbaumer was also active in the casino of the Catholic Workers' Association, worked from 1939 as a member and chairman of the church advisory board of Hard and was chairman of the board of trustees of the state fire insurance, member of the board of the Raiffeisenkasse Hard and member of the church choir.

Private

Franz Josef Birnbaumer was the son of the haulier Wilhelm Birnbaumer (1874-1910) and his wife Ottilia Birnbaumer, née Hermann (1871-1910). His parents died on the same day in 1910. Birnbaumer married Paula Schneider (1906–1982) on June 15, 1936 and had three sons and two daughters, who were born between 1938 and 1947. He suffered from a congenital physical disability, which is why he was never drafted into the military.
