Franz Josef Werner

Franz Josef Werner (born February 2, 1847 in Schelklingen ; † June 5, 1908 , ibid) was editor and publisher of the Lauchert newspaper and director of the Ulmer Zeitung.

Werner was born the son of the tailor Josef Werner (1810–1847) and his wife Franziska Günter (1816–1898). Franz Joseph was the only surviving son. His father died at the age of 37 on December 16, 1847, when Franz Joseph was not yet a year old. The mother remained a widow with several children for a long time and only married the weaver Ludwig Rehm (1808–1884) a second time on September 9, 1873.

Werner probably attended elementary school in Schelklingen. His further training brought him to Spaichingen , where he completed an apprenticeship as a printer in the printing shop of the "Heuberger Boten" from 1861–1865. In the following 14 years until 1879 he worked in various shops and locations, for example in the Greiner and Pfeiffer Hofbuchdruckerei in Stuttgart. When he returned to Spaichingen, he and a bookbinder named Honer founded the company "Honer und Werner", which combined a book printing and bookbinding company. The publishing house published u. a. the newspaper "Anzeiger für Heuberg und Baar". However, the business could not find stable sales. And so he responded to the offer of Catholic circles in Tuttlingen to publish a “center sheet” there, but it did not flourish either. Finally he had success in Gammertingen with the establishment of the Lauchert newspaper . As early as 1876, the book printers Sauter and this Steinweg tried to found a Lauchert newspaper, but the project was initially unsuccessful. It wasn't until Werner took over as publisher and editor that the number of subscribers rose. The actual establishment of the Lauchert Zeitung is therefore in 1879. The newspaper viewed itself as a regional organ for Hohenzollern and the neighboring parts of Württemberg and Baden and appeared in four issues a week. In 1900 the newspaper had 2,300 buyers; the readership thus went far beyond the boundaries of the city of Gammertingen, which had 1,153 inhabitants in 1885.

From 1890 Werner devoted himself to the technical and organizational structure of the Ulmer Zeitung , an organ of liberalism . The liberals were opponents of Bismarck and represented a left-liberal program. The Ulmer Zeitung publishing house also acquired rights to publish various specialist journals.

Werner remained the director of this newspaper until 1901. On May 1, 1901, Werner returned to his hometown Schelklingen and lived there as a "privateer". On January 26, 1902, he and several Schelklinger “comrades” founded the savings and loan association, today a branch of Volksbank Ehingen, and was its chairman until 1906.

In the same year he founded the Schelklinger Beautification Association , which among other things laid out hiking trails, published postcards and generally campaigned for the improvement of the cityscape.

Werner married Josefine Hauser (probably in the 1870s). The marriage had four children: Genovefa, married to the mechanic August Göggel; Josefine married the businessman A. Feuchter; Ernst married Therese Richter; and Mina married the railroad assistant Max Scheitenberger.

Werner died on June 5, 1908 in Schelklingen at the age of 61. The Lauchert newspaper published an extensive obituary.

A. Barth wrote a poem on Franz Josef Werner, which appeared in overalls in 1916 .
