Franz Stockreiter (* 1952 ) is an Austrian criminal who was sentenced to life imprisonment for double murder . He murdered a therapist in the Göllersdorf prison, which led to a change in focus in dealing with dangerous perpetrators in this prison.

Double homicide

The 22-year-old carpenter Franz Stockreiter was arrested in April 1974. His 18-year-old ex-girlfriend Leopoldine R. reported him after he was said to have ambushed her for weeks and once threatened her with a knife. However, after a few hours of pre-trial detention, he was released. Shortly afterwards, on April 12, 1974, he hid in the barn on the property of his ex-girlfriend and her parents in Weissenbach an der Triesting . When he was surprised by Leopoldine's 53-year-old mother, he beat the woman with a wooden stick. Alarmed by the cries for help, Leopoldine R. ran to the barn and was also killed there by Stockreiter. The police called by neighbors were able to arrest the Stockreiter, who had fled on foot, near Heiligenkreuz .

His trial at the regional court in Wiener Neustadt began in June 1975 , where he testified that he had already planned the death of his ex-girlfriend on the day of the crime and that her mother only murdered to spare her the sight of the daughter who was later killed. He was sentenced to life imprisonment and transferred to Stein Prison.

Murder in prison

When he began to suffer from delusions there, he was transferred to the special penal institution in Göllersdorf in 1988 and treated for years. Despite his fantasies, the double murderer was granted a total of 194 releases between 1988 and 1995 in order to prepare him for a possible release from prison. When he found some of his prison files with apparently negative prognoses in the waste paper in March 1995 through his employment as a houseworker, he believed that he no longer had a chance of freedom. He holed himself up with a chainsaw and a petrol can in the jail's garbage room and asked to speak to the judge responsible for his release. With the help of the 39-year-old psychotherapist Veronika Kreuziger-Hitz who was treating him, however, he was persuaded to give up. Two weeks later, on April 4, 1995, Veronika Kreuziger-Hitz met him again for a therapeutic session. When the psychotherapist informed him that she would be leaving the detention center in a few weeks for further training, Stockreiter killed the woman with a craft knife found in the garbage . In December 1995 he was sentenced again to life imprisonment by the Korneuburg Regional Court.

The murder of a therapist in a prison is the only case of this type in Austria and led to a changed focus in the JA Göllersdorf. While up to now in the therapeutic area the main focus was on confidentiality, the consideration of a therapist-client relationship that was as undisturbed as possible, now the protection of the members of the care services and increased surveillance by prison guards are the top priorities. Depending on the local conditions, this is done by optical monitoring or with the help of personal emergency call devices. In the event of structural changes, it will also be planned in future that the rooms in which therapy sessions are to take place are located in the vicinity of rooms in which officers from the prison guard are regularly present.
