The novel tells in the first person the last painful school years of the high school student Franz Obrist , whose school performance is very poor. He has already had to repeat several grades and is eventually expelled from school. He protests against this with success. Franz's problem is that he doesn't want to grow up. He cannot face life as a student any more than he can imagine life as an adult . In order to stop growing up, he mainly deals with smoking weed , skipping school and other less socially acceptable behavior. He also takes care of his disabled brother Julian , who was born with Down syndrome , and of his badger named MC ( Master of Ceremonies ) , but with little responsibility . Franz falls in love with the girl Venezuela , but does not dare to come close.

Many entertaining episodes from Franz's everyday school life are reported. He has a friendly relationship with the Turkish school caretaker who tragically dies of alcoholism . Another friendship connects him with the outsider Johann , whom he initially moves into his home in order to later find a place to live with his dealer .

Despite all the difficulties of the main character of the novel ends with the completion of the baccalaureate and a kiss between Francis and Venezuela.

The story of Franz is told later in the book Planet Obrist . He is planning a trip with his badger.
