The Franciscan Sisters of Penance and Christian Love are a Catholic religious order of women. You are one of the Franciscan Sisters .

history

The Congregation of the Franciscan Sisters of Penance and Christian Love was founded by Catharina Damen in Heythuysen (Netherlands) in 1835 . As a religious, Catharina Damen was called "Mother Magdalena". In 1852 the first sisters came to Germany, namely to Freckenhorst and Hamb near Sonsbeck . From Germany the sisters went to Brazil and the USA in 1872. The religious community spread rapidly in the former colony of the Dutch East Indies . A first group of ten sisters began their mission there in 1870 .

The congregation today

Today this congregation has about 1800 sisters in the Netherlands, Germany, Italy, Poland, Belarus, Indonesia, the Philippines, East Timor, Tanzania, USA, Mexico, Guatemala, Mexico. Since its inception, the community has not had a clearly defined field of work. The sisters try to use their means to respond to the needs of their time and environment.

Self-image

The community sees its crucial task in living the gospel among people.

In their general chapter , the sisters put it this way: “Like Francis of Assisi and Magdalena Damen, our founder, we trust in God's goodness and providence. We live the gospel in our time with reverence and respect for all that God created. "

Today the community in Germany has two provinces. The sisters are called " Nonnenwerther Franziskanerinnen" or " Lüdinghauser Franziskanerinnen" after their respective provincial seat .
