Franciscan Church

The Franciscan monastery Cheb is a former monastery complex with a church of the Franciscans in the city of Cheb (at that time Eger).

The religious of the Franciscan order, founded in 1210, came to Eger before 1256 and built a church and a monastery . It belonged to the Saxon Franciscan Province (Saxonia) . The buildings were destroyed in the city fire of 1270, four brothers and ten other people were killed in the church. The church and monastery were rebuilt and the church was consecrated in 1285 . It is located directly opposite the former Poor Clare Monastery . The sacristy and the adjoining part of the monastery wall and a cloister from the first half of the 14th century have been preserved.

The Cheb Franciscans joined the Observants in 1465 , a stricter direction of the order. As a result of the monastery closings in the course of the Reformation , only the two convents in Halberstadt and Eger still existed in Saxonia at the end of the 16th century . In 1603, the leadership of the Franciscan order ordered the incorporation of the Eger convent into the Upper German (Strasbourg) order province.
