The two - tower Minorite Church of St. Anthony ( Hungarian: Szent Antal Minorita templom ) , located on Dobó István Square in Eger , is one of the most beautiful late baroque churches in Hungary .

history

The Franciscans built a monastery and a church in Eger as early as the 13th century, but had to leave the city in 1596 after it was conquered by the Turks . After the reconquest on December 18, 1687, the church, which had meanwhile been used as a mosque , was handed over to the Minorites .

This church collapsed in 1712 and the contract was awarded to build a new church. The foundation stone was laid in March 1758. The construction was directed by János Falk and, after his death, continued by János Nitsmann until it was completed in 1767 .

The decoration inside and outside the church followed in the following years. The main altarpiece was created by Johann Lucas Kracker in 1770 . The painting of the vaults with scenes from the life of St. Anthony comes from Márton Raindl , a painter from Pressburg .

In the new church a used baroque organ was first installed, which was brought from the old church and is currently in the St. Orban's church in Gyöngyös . The cabinet of today's organ comes from the cathedral , in which Ludwig Mooser installed a new 17-part organ in 1856.

The church was consecrated in 1773.
