The Franciscan monastery was a Franciscan monastery in Sorau , today Żary, in eastern Lower Lusatia . It existed from the 13th century until 1549.

history

monastery

The monastery was probably founded in 1274 by Albrecht von Pack, the then Lord of Sorau. The oldest written mention of the monastery is from 1299. It was consecrated to John the Baptist and the Evangelist John and belonged to the Saxon order of the Franciscans.

Almost no historical evidence has survived about the history, the number and origin of the members or the economic situation. The monastery carried out pastoral care for the residents of the city. The crypt of the monastery church served at least three lords of Sorau as a burial place (Ulrich von Dewin, Ulrich von Pack, Friedrich von Bieberstein). In 1500 a brother Martin was mentioned in the provincial chapter of the Saxon order province in Görlitz.

From 1518 the monastery came to the Martinian province of Saxonia S. Johannis Baptistae , which practiced a moderately strict interpretation of the order's rule on poverty.

The time of the dissolution is not known, possibly around 1537 (?) With the Reformation in Neumark. In 1549 the entire monastery burned down with buildings and inventory. The whereabouts of the Franciscans is unknown.

Reuse

In 1550 the monastery church was rebuilt as a Protestant parish church, and a hospital ( Oberhospital ) was built on the site of the former monastery . In 1619 the church burned down again. In 1718 an orphanage was built on the monastery grounds, and the church was rebuilt in 1728. A school was also built in 1837.

Today the garrison church is used as a Roman Catholic parish church.
