The Frauenbergkirche Mariae Himmelfahrt in Stein an der Donau , a district of Krems an der Donau , is a former church and has been a memorial to those who fell in both world wars since the mid-1960s. It was built in the 14th century on a rock terrace above the parish church of St. Nikolaus and is connected to it by the steep Frauenberg stairs. The tower, popularly known as Alter Michl , characterizes the townscape of Stein.

The Frauenberg Church is a Gothic hall church with a mighty square tower with a domed roof dome that can be seen from afar; the slightly wider and rather low nave is built onto the tower on the east side. On the top floor of the tower there is an apartment for the fire guard, which was used until 1970. The fireplace of this apartment can still be seen on the north side of the domed roof and the balcony on the south side.

On the north wall of the nave there are remains of a wall painting from the 3rd quarter of the 14th century depicting the adoration of the three wise men. The sculptor Johann Kröll created the memorial for the fallen.

The civic bell with a diameter of 1.23 meters and a weight of 3.4 tons was cast in 1782 by the Viennese bell foundry Johann Caspar Hofbauer Combany . In the course of the Second World War, it was removed to be melted down. In 1946, however, it was found unharmed and it was then hung up again in the tower.

history

The Frauenbergkirche is a successor to the Michaelskirche, which was located in the same place and first appeared in a document in 1081. The construction took place around 1380 and 1401 it was first mentioned in a document. In the course of the Josephinian reforms , the church was desecrated in the second half of the 18th century. Johann Winter later acquired the building, repaired it and handed it over to the city.

The memorial to the fallen soldiers of both world wars in the secularized Frauenberg Church, designed by the sculptor Johann Kröll.

In 1962 the high altar erected in 1704 was transferred to the parish church of Ottenthal and from 1963 to 1965 the building was restored and transformed into a memorial for those who fell in the two world wars. During the restoration, excavations were also carried out, during which the remains of an older altar foundation were found, which can be assigned to the Romanesque St. Michael's Church. At a depth of 2.4 meters, a layer of culture (mortar quarry stone floor) was also exposed, which probably dates from Roman times.
