The parish church Stein an der Donau is located in Stein an der Donau on an extension of the Steiner Landstrasse at the entrance to the Frauenbergkirche in the municipality of Krems an der Donau in Lower Austria . The Roman Catholic parish church of St. Nikolaus belongs to the dean's office in Krems in the diocese of St. Pölten . The church is a listed building .

history

The church was mentioned in a document in the 12th century. Parish rights were mentioned in a document from 1263 and the church was a vicariate church of Krems until the end of the 16th century. The Gothic choir from the second half of the 14th century and the late Gothic staggered hall from the second half of the 15th century have a late Gothic west tower. In the 18th century the church was baroque and regothic around 1900. 1951 was a restoration.

Church exterior

The nave and the choir show themselves with massive, double-stepped buttresses. Under the eaves are a number of rectangular hatches. The late Gothic three-lane pointed arch windows have a rich variable tracery with three-pass, four-pass and fish-bubble shapes. To the west, three-pass windows are partly overlapped by the tower. There is a surrounding base cornice and cornice. The south portal with a wedge is from the first half of the 18th century. The two-bay choir has a five-eighth closing . To the north of the nave is a two-storey extension from 1464. The southern neo-Gothic extension was built around 1901. The baroque bell storey around 1711/1714 with corner vases based on plans by Jakob Prandtauer (?) Has an onion helmet with a lantern. The south-facing, mighty pointed arch portal has a keel-arch frame with pinnacles and finials. The northern pointed arch portal is walled up.

There are numerous gravestones set into the outer walls.

Church interior

The three-aisled, four-bay staggered hall has profiled pointed arcades on eight-sided pillars, the central nave has a mesh rib vault, the narrower aisles have oblong cross rib vaults and show coats of arms in relief on the keystones to the north.
