The city fortification Drosendorf is the preserved city wall in the city of Drosendorf-Zissersdorf in the northern Waldviertel in Lower Austria.

The 1.7 km long city wall encompasses the entire old town of Drosendorf, which is located on a mountain in a Thaya loop . In the wall there were two city gates, the Horner Tor and the Raabser Tor, of which the Raabser Tor is still preserved. The wall also binds the former castle, Drosendorf Castle . Today, a themed hiking trail leads around the city on the terrace of the walls.

The first city wall was built in the middle of the 13th century. With a wall thickness of 1.5 meters, it was about 8 meters high at the two gates. In the years 1260 to 1300 two towers were built at Horner Tor, which were also habitable. To the west of the Raabser Tor, a tower was built soon after, which no longer exists as it was demolished in the 19th century. Only then was the wall reinforced and given the shape it still has today. So the wall was about 10 meters high and 1.9 meters thick. The construction work lasted until the first decades of the 15th century. Reasons for the reinforcement were, for example, the fighting for the city that took place in 1405, but also the following Hussite Wars . The round tower received 3 meter thick walls that one could also repel guns. Almost all around the city, a late Gothic kennel fortification was placed in front of the city wall, which has numerous loopholes.

Since the guns also got stronger in the 16th and 17th centuries, the kennels had to be reinforced. Most of the porches built at the south-eastern corner of the city wall are no longer there today. A shooting range was set up west of the castle in 1667.

The terraces with the kennels have been converted into gardens over the years.

With this listed wall ( list entry ) Drosendorf is one of the nine towns in Lower Austria where large parts have also been preserved: Eggenburg , Hainburg an der Donau , Horn , Laa an der Thaya , Retz , Waidhofen an der Thaya , Weitra and Zwettl .
