The Women's Plan (2014), looking east

The Frauenplan is a central square in the south of the city center of Eisenach in Thuringia . It is one of the three historical market settlements in today's urban area and part of the Eisenach historic center .

history

The name is derived from the former Eisenach cathedral , the church of St. Marien "Our dear women", which was present on the western part of the square from the 13th to the end of the 17th century.

The Frauenplan - actually the plan on the Frauenberge, because the Frauenberg is the height itself on which the cathedral stood - was free from houses downwards, whereas further up there was the monastery brewery and a fountain, which the canons as compensation for the demolished towers of the cathedral from the city. Above on the right hand side were the apartments of the canons, further to the left a school that Johannes Rothe directed for a while, to the left of the church the church house and the cemetery. Am Frauenplan is the birthplace was Johann Sebastian Bach , near the day lying on the square Bach House .

The monastery brewery was converted into a princely brewery in 1525, became the property of the city of Eisenach in 1610 and was in operation, with interruptions, until 1839. The building remained until after 1890 and was then demolished. The well also existed until at least 1890 and was used to store wooden well tubes.

During excavation work on the Frauenplan in 1883, some skeletons were found, they come from the former cemetery.

The development of the women's plan, including the Bach House, was in the Second World War in a bomb attack in February 1945 severely affected, many houses were damaged or, especially in the transition to Lutherstraße (then Fleischgasse ) on the north side of the square, completely destroyed. The vacant lots were rebuilt in the 1950s. Historical development on the east side of the square towards Frauenberg and Marienstrasse was demolished in 1961 and the parking lot that is still available today was created.

Today's design

In the middle of the square is the Bach monument , which was moved there from the market square in 1938 . From this in a westerly direction up to the former cathedral there is a green space and staircase, the eastern part of the square is used as a parking lot for visitors to the Bachhaus. The Bachhaus was expanded by a modern extension in the 2000s, which dominates the current image of the square.
