Fred Toplak (born February 14, 1959 in Gelsenkirchen-Hassel ) is a German local politician (TOP party) and has been the mayor of Herten since 2016 .

Career

Toplak completed an apprenticeship as a sign and illuminated advertising manufacturer and initially worked as a master for a company. Since 1984 he has been running an advertising agency as an independent entrepreneur. He is married, has four children and has lived in the Transvaal district of Herten since 1994.

In the city and region, Toplak became known to a wider public primarily as an extreme runner. He continues to practice this hobby, to a lesser extent, as mayor.

politics

Toplak was not politically active before starting his election campaign. Although he was briefly a member of the pirate party, he was not involved there himself. Only in June 2018, after a long period of planning, did he become politically active again as part of the founding of the TOP party, of which he is chairman.

The change of the previous mayor, Ulrich Paetzel ( SPD ), to the Emschergenossenschaft made it necessary to elect the mayor of the city of Herten in 2016. Fred Toplak ran as a non-party candidate and made it to the runoff election in the first ballot with 27.44% of the vote, in which he finally prevailed with 66.24%. Herten had previously been run by SPD mayors without interruption since 1948.
