Frederik Fischer (born February 7, 1809 in Aabenraa ; † June 4, 1871 there ) was a Danish editor.

Live and act

Frederik Fischer was the son of the helmsman Fester Fischer (1774–1863) and his wife Catharina Regina, née Callsen (1783–1840). Like his ancestors and father, he would have liked to work as a seafarer, but this was not possible due to a leg disease. In 1824 he left school and trained as a watchmaker. In his spare time he was interested in optical devices. Astronomy was added later.

The Danish professor Christian Flor , who taught at Kiel University , inspired Fischer to set up a lending library in Aabenraa as part of the emerging Danish national feeling. Since the then mayor was of the opinion that Fischer was staying out of politics, in 1839 he granted him the privilege of taking over the Apenrader Wochenblatt . Contrary to expectations, he published the newspaper in Danish a year later.

Fischer was very skilful and talented against Schleswig-Holsteinism. He managed to get the population in Aabenraa and the surrounding area to read Danish books and magazines again. He fought against stiff government resistance. He described his attitude with the words “We are Danes, we think and feel Danish; as Danes we have a name in the past and we are known all over the world. "

After the armed conflict in 1848, which meant great financial losses for Fischer, his newspaper appeared under the name "Freia". A few years later he sold the paper to his brother-in-law Sørensen. The newspaper merged with the Dannevirke in the 1870s and appeared until 1903. In 1857, Fischer published a collection of Schleswig folk tales, which appeared in several editions. Even after the German-Danish War he did not give up his point of view.

On October 15, 1833, Fischer married Anna Barbara Christensen (* 1811), who died in 1881. On May 6, 1853, he married Clara Vilhelmine von den Bendt (1804–1881).
