The Skamlingsbanken is a terminal moraine in Jutland southeast of Kolding and northeast of Christiansfeld in Vejstrup Sogn on the Little Belt . With a height of 113 meters it is one of the higher peaks in Sønderjylland .

history

The Skamlingsbanke as terminal moraine has an extension of 2–3 kilometers and is under nature protection. It is important as a meeting place for the Danish population of Sønderjylland (including southern Schleswig ), who held festivals here from 1843 to strengthen Danish identity and language in northern Schleswig as part of the Danish national movement that emerged in the first half of the 19th century . In 1844 students sang Der Er et yndigt land here and the song became popular; today it is the Danish national anthem. The initiators of these meetings were able to acquire the Skamlingsbanken as property due to a money collection. In 1863 they erected a 15-meter-high obelisk made of granite blocks on the top of the hill , which honored 18 personalities of the Danish movement. It was laid down by the Prussians in the German-Danish War in 1864. The stones were sold and bought by Danish straw men who hid them near Skamlingsbanken. After the end of the war, Skamlingsbanke was north of the newly drawn border with Germany and so the obelisk could be rebuilt in 1864 after the Peace of Vienna (1864) . As a result, several individual monuments were erected on the Skamlingsbanken for deserving personalities around the Danish cause. From 1911 to 1948 Skamlingsbanken had a breakpoint of the Kolding Sydbaner . After 1945, the belfry was a memorial for the members of the Danish resistance movement from southern Jutland, who lost their lives during the occupation by Germany in World War II. The carillon plays the Prince Jürgen March , named after Prince Georg of Denmark . The march, composed by Jeremiah Clarke , was used again and again by the BBC during the Second World War at the beginning of the broadcasts aimed at Denmark, and after the war it was also adopted as a theme song by BBC World Service .
