Free Rehabilitation, Economic, Education and Legal Assistance Volunteers Association Inc. ( Free LAVA , formerly Free Legal Assistance Volunteers Association ) is a non-governmental organization in Cebu City , Philippines , that cares for prisoners and vulnerable children and adolescents. In 1984 she was awarded the Right Livelihood Award (Alternative Nobel Prize).

history

The organization was founded in 1983 by the lawyer Winefreda Geonzon , who saw the situation of many prisoners during the dictatorship of President Marcos , some of whom were held without trial or beyond their sentences. Many of them were also tortured. Even after the end of the dictatorship in 1986, she continued her work, as the legal situation was still arbitrary and brutal. In 1987, 26 regional groups worked under one roof.

In 1995 the Children in Conflict with the Law (CICL) project was founded. Since then, working with children and young people at risk has been a main focus of activity.

activities

Free LAVA offers help for prisoners in the form of legal, humanitarian and other support. It also offers rehabilitation measures, therapies and other help in everyday life for released prisoners. Offers are made to prevent criminal offenses.
