Winefreda Geonzon

Winefreda Geonzon (born Winefreda Estraneda , born October 8, 1941 , † July 25, 1990 in Cebu City ) was a Filipino lawyer who was particularly committed to prisoners and disadvantaged children and young people. In 1984 she received the Right Livelihood Award (Alternative Nobel Prize).

Life

Winefreda Estraneda grew up in Bogo as one of seven siblings. After graduating from school, she initially earned a Bachelor of Science in Elementary Education. In 1963 she graduated from the University of the Visaya in Cebu City with a law degree. Since 1967 she worked as Legal Aid Director in the Integrated Bar in Cebu. In her work she came into contact with the catastrophic situation of prisoners in the dictatorship under President Marcos . She also got involved with neglected and criminally vulnerable children and young people.

In 1983 she founded the non-governmental organization Free Legal Assistance Volunteers Association , which endeavored to provide legal legal and humanitarian aid to prisoners. In 1984 she was awarded the Right Livelihood Award with the organization for this. Even after the end of the Marcos dictatorship in 1986, she continued her work for prisoners and children and young people.

In 1990 she died of a tumor. In 1991 a street in Cebu City was named after her.
