Freelander (novel)
Freelander is a novel by Miljenko Jergović from 2007. The first German edition was published in 2010.
content
The protagonist is the retired Zagreb history teacher Karlo Adum, who has to drive to Sarajevo in his orange 1975 Volvo on the occasion of the opening of his uncle Tadja's will. Karlo Adum drives through war-torn Bosnia with a revolver in his glove compartment. In doing so, he remembers the past. When he arrives in Sarajevo, he learns that the password for a Swiss numbered account is " Freelander ", even though the car of the same name did not even exist in 1986, the year in which Tadja had the account created.
criticism
“The real Freelander is not Uncle Tadjia, but the Volvo driver Karlo. But that Jergovic's book is a partly wistful, partly angry, great novel about the loss of Yugoslavia, one would have understood without the strange metaphor. "
"Miljenko Jergovic wrote an amazing, moving, loving and blatant book about his country (whatever that means) that arouses curiosity about the books that are still to be expected."
