life and work
Yugoslavia
Jergović published the first newspaper and book articles in the late 1980s. In addition to journalistic work, he first began to write poetry. For his first collection of poems, Opservatorija Varšava (1988), he was honored with the “Goran” and “Mak Dizdar” poetry awards. This was followed by the poetry collections Uči li noćas neko u ovom gradu japanski? (German Will anyone learn Japanese in this city tonight?, 1990) and Himmel Comando (1992).
In 1993 Jergović left Sarajevo, which had been besieged by the Yugoslav People's Army since April 5, 1992 .
Croatia
He has lived and published his works in the Croatian capital Zagreb since May 1993 . He became known to the international readership through the collection of short stories Sarajevski Marlboro (1994) (Eng. Sarajevo Marlboro , 1996), for which he won international prizes.
Mama Leone (1999), Buick Rivera (2002), Freelander (2007) and Dvori od oraha (German Das Walnusshaus , 2008) are the best known of his more recent books.
On April 16, 2007, he resigned from the Croatian Writers' Union on the grounds that his membership was in contradiction to his attitude and relationship to Croatian literature and literature as a whole.
Jergović also publishes newspaper articles and essays in Croatian, Serbian and Bosnian-Herzegovinian newspapers. After years of collaboration with the left-wing satirical political weekly newspaper Feral Tribune from Split , he has been writing for the Croatian news magazine Globus since 2000 . He also writes columns for the Bosnian-Herzegovinian news magazine BH Dani .
Soccer
Jergović is one of those writers who, in their works, also approach football as a cultural phenomenon that helps determine contacts between neighboring ethnic groups. For the German audience, he repeatedly commented on football games, such as the game Brazil - Germany (1: 7) at the 2014 World Cup ; ARD gave his comment the title “When football becomes art”.
In 2012, several chapters from the manuscript of his novel “ Wilimowski ” were read out on the Serbian broadcaster RTS ; In 2016 the novel was published entirely in Polish. The occasion was the 100th birthday of the dribble artist Ernst Willimowski , who was the most effective striker of both the Polish and German national teams based on the number of goals scored per game .
His works have been translated into more than 15 languages.
